Many standards promulgated by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) explicitly require the employer to train employees in the safety and health aspects of their jobs. Other OSHA standards make it the employer’s responsibility to limit certain job assignments to employees who are “certified,” “competent,” or “qualified”—meaning that they have had special previous training, inside or outside of the workplace. These requirements reflect OSHA’s belief that training is an essential part of every employer’s safety and health program for protecting workers from injuries and illnesses. Many researchers conclude that those who are new on the job have a higher rate of accidents and injuries than more experienced workers.

If ignorance of specific job hazards and of proper work practices is even partly to blame for this higher injury rate, then training will help to provide a solution. Training in the proper performance of a job is time and money well spent, and the employer might regard it as an investment rather than an expense.

Effective program of safety and health training for workers can result in fewer injuries and illnesses, better morale, and lower insurance premiums, among other benefits of all safety and health training.

Training Records will provide evidence of the employer’s good faith and compliance with OSHA standards. Documentation can also supply an answer to one of the first questions an accident investigator will ask: “Was the injured employee trained to do the job?” Be sure you can answer “YES.”

The content of a company’s training program and the methods of presentation should reflect the needs and characteristics of the particular workforce. Therefore, identification of needs is an important early step in training design. Involving everyone in this process and in the subsequent teaching can be highly effective.

The five principles of teaching and learning should be followed to maximize program effectiveness.

•  Trainees should understand the purpose of the training.
•  Information should be organized to maximize effectiveness.
•  People learn best when they can immediately practice and apply newly acquired knowledge and skills.
•  As trainees practice, they should get feedback.
•  People learn in different ways, so an effective program will incorporate a variety of training methods.

Training Program Guidelines

The Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) of 1970 does not specifically address the responsibility of employers to provide health and safety training. However, more than 100 of the current OSHA standards do contain employer-required training. The first step in the training process is to determine what problems can be solved with training and then develop an appropriate program. Ideally, safety and health training should be provided before problems or accidents occur.

This training should include general safety and health policies as well as specific work procedures. Training should be repeated if an accident or near-miss incident occurs.

Train-the-Trainer

Safety Guidance Specialist-OH&S will train your designated representatives to conduct their own general training. Selected employees will receive in-depth training based on site-specific programs. The training will take place at the clients’ facilities and the programs can be videotaped for future use.

Payment and Registration

All course fees are due and payable prior to the class. Safety Guidance Specialists offers prepayment for courses by check, money order, company purchase order, or credit card. Registration may be made by telephone, facsimile, mail, email or online.

Workplace Medical Responder Training

Basic CPR, AED, Frist Aid and Bloodborne Pathogens

CPR, AED, and Basic First Aid combination training is an easy option for their students seeking a comprehensive training class. The program helps develop basic first aid knowledge, skills, and the confidence to respond. CPR, AED, and Basic First Aid combination training is an excellent choice for both the community and workplace setting, and is consistent with recommendations of the 2010 National First Aid Science Advisory Board and OSHA’s best practices for first aid training programs in the workplace.

Bloodborne Pathogens program includes information that will help students understand what bloodborne pathogens are and how risks of exposure can be reduced for themselves and others. The program assists in satisfying the training requirements of the U.S. Department of Labor,OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Standard (29 CFR 1920.1030).

Medical Frist Responder – 40 Hours

This program is designed to provide students with the core knowledge, skills and attitudes to function in the capacity of a First Responder. The curriculum includes skills necessary for the student to provide emergency medical care with a limited amount of equipment.

This course includes CPR instruction and certification and First Responder certification. Various topics include Legal and Ethical Issues, lifting and Moving Patients, Advanced Airway Management, Patient Assessment, Medical Emergencies, Bleeding and Soft Tissue Injuries, Muscle and Bone Injuries, Environmental Hazards, Stabilization and Transport.

Emergency Vehicle Driver Training (EVOC)

The Emergency Vehicle Driver Training course provides emergency vehicle operators with the knowledge and skills necessary to safely operate an emergency vehicle in emergency and non-emergency mode. All EMS operators take this course prior to operating an emergency vehicle. Topics covered include legal aspects of emergency vehicle operations, navigation and route mapping, driver roles and responsibilities, basic driving skills, and proper driving procedures. The first day of class is conducted in the classroom. The second day of class includes a hands-on practical in which participants will have to drive an emergency vehicle through a competency course.

The Annual Refresher Course is 1 day and includes both classroom and hands–on training.
